East Peoria Facts
East Peoria, Illinois is located near the center of the state in Tazewell County. With a little over 22 square miles of area, East Peoria has a budding population of over 23,000 residents. Naturally east of Peoria, the city is also located along the banks of Peoria Lake which leads into the Illinois River and is situated 2.5 hours southwest of Chicago. From its beautiful green landscapes, the calming flow of the river and the bustling downtown area, residents find a lot to love when they call East Peoria their home.

East Peoria History
Throughout East Peoria’s long history, one thing has remained part of a constant drive to its success: access to the Illinois River, a soil rich for agriculture and plenty of natural resources. Originally called Bluetown, settlers began coming to the area around the mid-1800’s. There are three theories as to why Bluetown was adopted as the name. They range from the origin of its settlers from Alsace Lorraine to the blue paint coating the stilts on some of the houses that dotted the land. Whatever the reason though, the name did not stick for very long and was eventually changed to Hilton in 1869. Driving off the thriving economy of Peoria, Hilton continued to grow and prosper as well. In 1889, the community was renamed the Village of East Peoria.

Coal was a major manufacturing force due to its ease of access followed by the establishment of the Carter Brick Yard which became another leading industry producing 40,000 bricks daily. Manufacturing boomed including the opening of a company called Caterpillar which famously builds tractors, earthmovers and more; although now headquartered across the river in Peoria, Caterpillar still operates many manufacturing facilities in East Peoria.

Living near the Illinois River, residents of East Peoria recognized the history of its ability to be affected by flooding. While there are many dams and runoffs, it was not until after the severe floods of 1927 as well as other major flooding after then that the Army Corp of Engineers developed a better system to combat the rising river after heavy downpours.
